Overview
This PCA course is designed to provide basic skills instruction and general orientation for employment in providing personal care services in the homes of the elderly and disabled. By the end of this training, the student will have the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to provide personal care services. Personal care services as described in the Arkansas Medicaid manual are services primarily based on the assessed physical dependency need for “hands-on” services with the following activities of daily living (ADL) eating, bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting and ambulating.
Students must meet the following qualifications.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be able to read and write in English to the degree necessary to perform the tasks expected; and
- Must be able to perform the tasks required
Upon completion of the training components, the student must demonstrate the competency to provide assistance to recipients by completing a written exam. After passing the written exam 80% or above), the student will be given a Certificate of Completion to provide services on behalf of Angelic Home Healthcare.
**Note**– This is not a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) course. If you want to work for an entity that requires state certification, you should contact a nursing home or technical school for training.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Recognize the personal care aide’s role in delivering services offered by the agency and identify responsibilities of the personal care aide to clients and to the agency.
- Demonstrate basic skills and techniques in performing or assisting with bathing, ambulation and exercise, personal grooming, principles of nutrition and meal preparations, health conditions, developmental stages and mental status, household services essential to health care at home, assistance with medication, safety in the home, and record keeping.
- Successfully complete a written test based on knowledge learned in the course which may include basic human needs, client rights, basic nutrition, first aide, personal care, communication, developmental stages, changes associated with disabilities, aging, terminal illnesses, and health conditions common in the elderly.
- Recognize and describe functional limitations and conditions that limit an individual’s ability to care for self, to complete required records, and to report changes to the appropriate individuals.
- This one-week training course will include 24 hours of classroom training and 16 hours of RN Supervised Practical Hours (Clinical Hours).
